Christie’s Shutters NFT Department in Strategic Pivot Under New CEO
Christie’s, the venerable U.K.-based auction house, has disbanded its dedicated non-fungible token (NFT) division, folding operations into its 20th and 21st-century art department. The move, confirmed by former VP of Digital Art Nicole Sales Giles, resulted in two layoffs in late August.
New CEO Bonnie Brennan, who assumed leadership in February, is steering the 256-year-old firm toward a reformatted approach to digital art sales. Christie’s pioneered high-profile NFT auctions in March 2021 with Beeple’s $69.3 million ‘Everydays’ sale, but now appears to be deprioritizing standalone crypto collectibles despite their role in mainstreaming digital art.
